What Are the Qualities of a "Good Wife"?

Historical “good wife” tests focus on semi-arbitrary qualities, such as a wife’s ability to keep a tidy house (which we agree is an enviable skill—for any gender), cook (same!), defer to her husband (yawn), or look properly “feminine,” but these qualities aren’t necessarily indicative of how good a partner someone is.

The thing is, the qualities that make up a “good wife” are largely the same qualities that make up a good husband: trustworthiness, devotion, patience, loyalty, good communication, shared values, and mutual support. It takes a lot of open communication and vulnerability to make a relationship work, but we have faith you can do it, regardless of gender! And if you want to rock a set of pearls and a 1950s housewife dress while you’re doing it, be our guest—but remember it has no bearing on your worth!
