Did somebody hack your Facebook account, and now you can't log in? Don't worry—Facebook takes hacking very seriously, and you'll probably be able to recover your account. In this article, we’ll explain how to recover your account, even if the hacker changed your password or contact information. We’ll also talk you through recovering a hacked Facebook Page.

What to Do If Your Facebook Account Is Hacked

If you suspect your Facebook account has been hacked, but you can still log in, change your password. Whether you can log in or not, you can secure and recover your account by following the prompts at facebook.com/hacked. You may need to provide a photo ID or other documents to prove ownership of your profile.

  1. 1
Visit facebook.com/hacked. Whether you’re still able to log into your account or not, visiting Facebook’s hacked account page is a good place to start. From here, you can follow the prompts to try regaining control of your account.[1]
    • If you’re already logged into a Facebook account, you may be prompted to log out now.
    • If possible, follow this process on a device you’ve recently used to log into your hacked account. Otherwise, Facebook might not allow you to recover your account.
    • If you can still log into your account, change your password immediately to keep the hacker from doing any more damage. If you don’t remember your password, here’s how to reset it.
  2. 2
Click the Next button. You’ll see it in the What to do if your account has been hacked box in the middle of the page.

  3. 3
Enter an email address or phone number associated with your account. Even if the hacker has changed your email address or phone number, you may still be able to use this method to locate your account. Click Continue.
  4. 4
Select your account and click Recover. If you don’t recognize your account, keep in mind that the hacker may have changed your name or profile picture.
    • If you don’t see your account, click Not you? Follow the suggestions in the window that pops up to try again (e.g., you can try searching by your username instead of your email/phone number, or try again on a different device that you’ve recently used to log into Facebook).
  5. 5
Follow the prompts to continue the recovery process. What happens next will depend on whether you can still access the email address or phone number associated with your account.
    • If you’re asked to provide a password for your account, enter the most recent password you remember, even if it’s no longer current.
    • If you can’t access the phone number or email address you used to create your account, you may be able to select an option like Try another way, No longer have access to these?, Forgot account?, or Recover.
    • You may be prompted to provide a new email address or phone number. You might also be asked to upload proof of your identity, such as a driver’s license or passport.
    • Keep in mind that if Facebook needs to verify your identity, it might take several days to complete the recovery process.
  6. 6
Click the link in the recovery email to reset your password. If you had to verify your identity and provide new contact information, it may take a few days to get a recovery email. Once you do, follow the instructions in the email to set a new password.
    • Some users report getting stuck in a verification loop at this stage of the process. To break the cycle, it may help to follow the recovery link from a different device and IP address. For example, visit a friend or family member’s home and use their computer to complete the password reset process.
      • You can also try completing this process with a VPN.
  7. 7
Secure your account. Once you log back in, Facebook may prompt you to take steps to further secure your account. This might include reviewing recent activity on your account (such as posts or changes to your profile) or setting up two-factor authentication (2FA) for your account.
    • If you’re not automatically prompted to review your security settings, visit this page to start a security review.

Recovering a Hacked Page

  1. 1
Fill out the Page recovery form. If a page you administer has been hacked, you can start the recovery process by sending in this recovery request form. Select the page that was hacked and click Send.[2]
    • It may take a day or more for Facebook to review and respond to your request.
    • You’ll get an email with information about your request once the update is complete.
    • If you can’t access the form or you don’t see your page, make sure you’re logged in with the account that you use to administer the page.
    • If your personal account (the one you use to admin the page) has been compromised, visit facebook.com/hacked instead.
  2. 2
Follow the prompts to secure your page. Once Facebook reviews your request, they’ll send instructions for recovering your account. You may be prompted to unlock your page if it was locked for security reasons. You should also review your page and undo any changes made by the hacker.
    • To prevent your page from being hacked again, consider enabling Advanced Protection (if it’s available to you). While logged into the personal account you use to manage your page, click your profile picture and go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Accounts Center > Password and security > Advanced Protection. Follow the prompts to set up advanced security measures for your account.[3]
      • This feature is not currently available to all Facebook users, so you might not see Advanced Protection in your security settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. 1
How do I know if my account has been hacked? If someone hacked your account, they might change your profile picture or username. They might also send messages or make posts or comments using your account. If you get notifications about attempted (or successful) logins from unfamiliar locations or devices, have trouble logging in, or get a notification that your Facebook email address or phone number has been changed, those are also signs you may have been hacked.[4]
  2. 2
How long does Facebook account recovery take? It depends on whether the hacker has completely locked you out of your account or not. If you can still log in (or at least still have access to any of the phone numbers or emails associated with your account), you might be able to recover your account in a matter of minutes. If Facebook has to verify your ID, the process can take days or longer.
    • Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be successful in recovering your account, even if you’re able to send proof of your identity.
  3. 3
What information do I need to recover my account? If the hacker hasn’t completely locked you out of your account, you probably only need a password (even if it’s no longer current) and access to an email address, phone number, or trusted two-factor authentication device associated with your account. If the hacker changed your contact information and password, you’ll need to provide an ID and possibly other documentation to prove your identity and ownership of the account.

Tips

  • While there isn't a cut-and-dry way to avoid being hacked on Facebook, constantly updating your password and refraining from opening links from people whom you don't know are both methods that will strongly reduce the likelihood that you get hacked.

Tips from our Readers

  • Don't make my mistake of desperately contacting shady third parties when your account gets hacked. This will likely create more headaches. You should always go through proper legal channels for account security issues. Stay patient and persistent with Facebook's support team.
  • Don't assume Facebook can instantly restore your account access. Investigations take time, especially with millions of users. Try to be patient and politely follow up if it takes over a week. If you feel ignored, firmly but kindly escalate your request.
  • If the hacker changed your account's recovery contact info, you'll need to provide your previous credentials or as many account details as possible when submitting the issue to Facebook. This gives them the best chance of verifying your identity.
  • You should enable two-factor authentication after regaining access to your account. This adds an extra login code sent to your phone for extra security. You may also want to change your password monthly.
  • If the hacker removed your recovery phone number or email address associated with your account, provide any previous contacts you used when reporting the issue to Facebook.
