Clean off the furniture before you paint it. Your furniture needs to be completely clean of any grease, dust, dirt, or debris before you begin to paint it, or else the paint will not adhere properly to the surface.

If you'd like to still see the wood grain, use a black stain. This is ideal for outdoor furniture, because it will protect the surface while still allowing moisture to escape from the wood. If you want a solid black, use black enamel paint in a semi-gloss finish.
