First you gotta understand that it's a cooperative experience and teach the dog that when they pull the lead tight, that doesn't make the walk continue.

If you pull your dog, it's just gonna play tug of war back, so give it a little tug to call the dog and start going backwards, rewinding as if you were a car in reverse. That will get the dog to "reset". Once they get back to your sight, continue walking. Soon, the dog will learn to walk beside you.

Teach a "look at me" cue. This could be "Look at me" or the puppy's name. Also, put in the time and be persistent and consistent.
  • Question
What do I do if I train my dog in the backyard, but she loses all of her training in the front yard?

Re-train or proof it in other areas. It's common for dogs to become confused when introduced to a new location. Proofing is where you teach a dog to generalize a behavior, by reaching it in one or two locations. So, if you first taught in your backyard, teach your dog in your front yard and possibly in a park or field. Your dog will then learn that he can walk on lead in multiple locations and generalize the behavior.

Yes, that is fine, but know that eight-week-old puppies learn just like six-week-old puppies, so you can teach this behavior as soon as you would like.
