  • Question
Can I wear tights to my riding lessons?

  • Question
What is the best kind of shirt to wear for English riding?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
The best shirt to wear for riding could be a polo shirt or a regular shirt. If you are riding on sand, I recommend a nice fitted, somewhat-long-sleeved shirt; if you do fall, you can get sand burns on your skin.
  • Question
My boots have laces. Is that a safety issue if it's just one riding lesson?
    Community Answer

A large amount of paddock boots and tall boots have laces, so this won't be a concern.
  • Question
Can I wear waterproof trousers if it is raining?

  • Question
I don't have riding boots or normal boots. Can I wear trainers? It is my first lesson.
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
You probably can. You might want to check with the place you're getting your lesson to be sure. But you'll want to get boots sooner rather than later. Riding without boots is not safe because if you get your foot caught in a stirrup or the horse steps on your foot, you could really be hurt.
  • Question
Do I have to wear high boots if it's just one riding lesson? I have one-inch heel boots, but they aren't knee-high, and are pretty low. Is there a requirement to wear high boots?
    StarHorse
    StarHorse

Not really, but it is more comfortable to use high boots. As long as it has that heel, you should be okay.
  • Question
If I only have jeans, what should I do?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
If you really want to learn to ride, you should buy or ask for gifts of all the recommended equipment. If you're not prepared to kit yourself out properly, you should ask yourself if you're really committed to learning to horse ride. If you're just having a one off taster lesson or aren't sure if horse riding is for you, but are keen to try, wear the most comfortable jeans you've got that aren't ripped, flared, or very low rise.
  • Question
Should I always wear half chaps with my riding breeches?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
If you have tall boots you won't need chaps, but if you're riding in paddock boots I would highly recommend wearing chaps to reduce pinching and blisters.

    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Yes, but only if you are riding Western. If you are riding English, you'll need to start off with paddock boots. Once you gain more experience, you may be able to purchase tall boots of some sort. Tall boots are made for English riding only. If you ride Western, stick to cowboy boots, but get actual western riding boots.
