    Expert Answer
There are many different grips for holding drumsticks. The match grip is holding the sticks in the same way. A French grip would be that you're holding your hands in front of you and your palms are facing each other. The Germanic and American grips are both more of a palm-down. But my preferred method when teaching is the match grip, where you hold the sticks on both hands the same way.

  • Question
What sticks should I use to play heavy metal music?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Heavier sticks, e.g. 2Bs, will make it easier to get a bigger, fatter sound, while lighter sticks, like 7As will make it feel slightly easier to go fast. That being said, I personally don't think the difference is that great. If in doubt, try a couple of different sizes and see which you like better.

For a toddler, you may want sturdier drumsticks made out of hickory. Depending on what drum the child is playing, a strong stick for a drumset is good.

Make sure the sticks are even. A good idea would be to ask a teacher/instructor. You might see really fancy sticks, but you want to avoid them, as they are usually uneven.
