Backpack or tote

  1. You'll be able to fit all of your essentials in there without jamming it to the brim with stuff.[1] If you have several bags and you aren't sure which one to bring with you, go with the bigger one.[2]

Waterproof bag and toiletries

  1. Pick up travel-size versions of all your favorite toiletries so you don’t weigh your overnight bag down too much.[10] A cute, vinyl makeup bag is perfect but if you don’t have one of those, you can use a zip-top freezer baggie in a pinch (just in case something leaks).[11] Pack these toiletries:
    • Toothbrush/toothpaste
    • Facewash
    • Moisturizer
    • Deodorant
    • Dry shampoo
    • Pads/tampons
    • Hairbrush/comb

Medicine/inhaler/retainer

  1. If you take prescription medicine or wear a retainer at night, you really shouldn't skip out on using them. Toss a little bottle of aspirin or ibuprofen in your bag, too—just in case you (or someone else) gets a headache.[13]
    • If you’re diabetic, don’t forget to bring your blood glucose meter, insulin, and glucose tablets. It’s better to be safe and prepared.[14]

Makeup essentials

  1. You’re only going to be away from home for one night, so don’t worry about bringing your entire makeup arsenal with you. Toss a few of your favorite small or travel-size essentials into a zippered pouch. That way, you're keeping your makeup separate from everything else in your bag.[19] Consider bringing:
    • Small makeup brushes
    • Mini mascara
    • Lip balm
    • Blush
    • Concealer (just in case you get a zit)

Tips from our Readers

  • When you're at the sleep over and you know you forgot something, just ask a parent! They might have extras, or you might be able to go home and get it.
  • Bring a board game or a card you like! Just be sure to ask the host beforehand. They might already have activities planned for the sleepover.
  • Come up with a secret word you can tell your parents over the phone if you're not having fun and want to them to come pick you up.
  • Bring your Netflix password or another streaming account so you can watch something if you're friend doesn't have these services!
