Improving Your Chemistry

When people talk about chemistry, they’re talking about how well you get along with a certain person. When you have chemistry with someone, your relationship feels natural. You talk to each other and feel a connection, momentum, inspiration. But how can you find chemistry when it feels like there’s nothing there? And how can you increase your chemistry together when you feel like you’re different people? We’re here to help.

Ask lots of questions. You can’t learn something about someone without asking questions! Otherwise, how would you ever know that you both love jazz, or you’re both obsessed with that obscure horror movie that came out years ago? Asking personal questions is a shortcut to connection. In a pinch, ask them things like, “What’s the last album you listened to?”, “How would you spend your last day on Earth?” or, “What are you looking forward to?”

Remember to “Yes, and…” Chemistry is a lot like improv. When you really want to hit it off with someone, you don’t want to run into conversational dead ends. One easy way to avoid them is keep riffing on what they say. Don’t just shut the conversation down or switch topics when you’re uncomfortable or lost. Instead, ask another related question, or disagree with them and ask them why they think what they think. Keep the ball rolling, don’t deflate it!

Don’t force it. Chemistry can be practiced, but it’s also not something you’re going to have with everyone. If you’re really not vibing with someone, it’s totally okay to thank them for the conversation, wish them well, and walk away. Who knows? It might just take a little time for you to warm up to each other, and you’ll find something to talk about next time you see them. If you try to force it, though, you might just make things awkward, and shut down that chance.
