Whether you watched Lost when it first aired over twenty (!) years ago or you got hooked after the hit show came to streaming services, you may have found yourself scratching your head during the emotional—and confusing—series finale. You're not alone. But while many viewers have dismissed the ending as "They were dead the whole time!" we're not convinced that accurately sums up what happened to the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815… So what did happen? Were they dead the whole time? Is the island the afterlife, or did the events on the island actually happen? What's the meaning of the season 6 flash-sideways? And what's with the church in the final episode? These questions and more, explained in the article ahead!
What happened at the end of Lost?
Writer Damon Lindelof said Lost is about "the mystery of what happens when you die." In the show's finale, LA-Jack meets other Flight 815 passengers at a church, where Christian explains they have all died and that the island was real. The show ends with island-Jack dying after saving his friends and the island.
