All About Labubu

Labubu is a collectible plush toy designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. With their mischievous grins and furry bodies, Labubus are sort of like a cross between an elf and a gremlin. Their unique look and hard-to-explain cuteness have made Labubus a social media sensation, with tons of people scrambling to get their hands on one of their own.[1]

Labubus are also usually sold in a blind box, so you never know which one you’re going to get. This adds to the excitement and appeal around them, with many social media creators posting “unboxing” videos of their reactions to the Labubu they got. Labubus can also be worn as charms on handbags or belt loops, making them a fashion accessory as much as a toy.[2]

Origins
Artist Kasing Lung was born in Hong Kong but moved to the Netherlands at age 7. There, he fell in love with whimsical Nordic fairy tales about elves, which inspired him to illustrate a book series called The Monsters. The Monsters features a tribe of female elves called Labubus, which are charactized as kind and helpful (although their good intentions can sometimes lead to unintended chaos).[3]

The Viral Rise of Labubu
Labubu toys have been gaining popularity since their release in 2019. Celebrities like Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Lisa from BLACKPINK have all been spotted with Labubu bag charms, which has contributed to their spread.[4] In the summer of 2025, the Labubu frenzy reached new heights, with the toy going mega viral on TikTok.

Buying Labubus
Labubus are sold by Pop Mart, but because they’re in such high demand, they often sell out. The most popular plush bag charm version costs about $20-$30 when purchased directly from Pop Mart, but resellers on platforms like eBay often charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for rare or out-of-stock Labubus.[5]
