How Long Does the Average Person Live?
According to 2022 data, the average person in the U.S. lives to be about 77.5 years of age. This does change a bit when you split it up by gender, though—on average, males live 74.8 years and females live 80.2 years.[1]
It’s important to note, however, that a variety of factors affect a person’s life expectancy and longevity. These include:
- Diet and nutrition: A balanced, healthy diet filled with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins tends to help people live longer. On the flip side, a diet with lots of fast food, sugar, and other processed foods may have a negative effect on longevity.
- Physical activity: Exercising on a regular basis helps you boost your mood, improve sleep quality, and maintain a healthy weight. All of these things can lead to a longer life. A more sedentary lifestyle, on the other hand, is linked to a higher likelihood of health issues like high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure, which can contribute to a shorter lifespan.
- Genetics: Genetics aren’t the biggest factor when it comes to longevity, but they do account for about 20%-30% of your expected lifespan. This means that if there are several people in your family who have lived to very old ages, you may have a genetic disposition to living super long, too![2]
- Alcohol and smoking: Smoking and high alcohol intake increase your risk for certain cancers and other health issues, so they can contribute to a shorter lifespan. As a result, quitting smoking and lowering your alcohol intake can help you live longer.[3]
- Mental health and stress levels: High levels of anxiety and stress can actually have a negative effect on your physical health. In fact, they’re linked to weakened immunity, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more, which can all contribute to shorter lifespans.[4] On the other hand, learning how to manage stress and taking care of your mental health can increase longevity.
