How to Care for Your Hands

Whether you've got slender or chubby, large or small hands is largely due to nature. But if you'd like to keep your hands looking and feeling great, here are some helpful tips:

  • Moisturize regularly. You might have a skincare routine for your face, but if you don't have one for your hands, you're missing out! Get into the habit of applying lotion regularly during the day and every time after you wash your hands.
  • Protect your skin and nails when working. Whether you're washing the dishes or gardening, wear cotton-lined gloves to keep your skin safe and soft. When you wash your hands, use a mild pH soap, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Exfoliate regularly. Just like you exfoliate dead skin from your face, you need to exfoliate dead skin from your hands. Use a loofah or a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and natural oil (like jojoba or coconut) to slough off the dead skin cells from the tops of your palms and your knuckles, and your fingers. Be sure to moisturize after!
  • Wear sunscreen every day. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher every day to keep your hands looking and feeling smooth and soft.
  • Enjoy a healthy diet. Did you know your diet affects your hand health and appearance? A balanced diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids can keep your skin soft and nourished and encourage healthy nail growth. A diet low in protein and vitamins C and B complex is likely to result in brittle nails that break easily.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking doesn't just harm your insides—it damages your skin, too. Over time, smoking can result in hands that are dull, gray, and wrinkly.
