A Glossary of Haikyuu!!’s Main Characters

Tobio Kageyama
Kageyama is a first-year setter on the Karasuno team who begins the series having already developed a lot of skill and talent in volleyball. He’s typically very serious and also tends to be quite arrogant about his abilities.

Kei Tsukishima
Tsukishima is a first-year middle blocker on the team. He tends to be very blunt and act like he doesn’t really care about volleyball, but later finds his true passion for the sport.

Tadashi Yamaguchi
Yamaguchi is a first-year middle blocker on the team. He later becomes a pinch server after deciding to hone his volleyball skills as much as possible, overcoming his insecurities about his abilities.

Daichi Sawamura
Daichi is the captain of the Karasuno boys’ volleyball team and a starting wing spiker. He takes his role very seriously; he’s normally quite patient and encouraging toward the team, but won’t hesitate to get strict when the situation calls for it.

Kōshi Sugawara
Sugawara is Karasuno’s vice captain, substitute setter, and pinch server. He has a very soothing, supportive presence on the team, and often goes out of his way to take care of his teammates and encourage them in tough situations.

Asahi Azumane
Asahi is Karasuno’s (sometimes reluctant) ace; he’s super tall and has an intimidating presence, but is very gentle and soft-spoken in person. He’s insecure about his position on the team in the beginning, but grows more confident as the series continues.

Ryūnosuke Tanaka
Tanaka is the team’s loud, extremely enthusiastic starting wing spiker, as well as an ace-in-training. He has a huge crush on the team’s manager, Kiyoko, and is quite protective of the younger members of the team. He’s known to get easily fired up on the court, to the point that Daichi sometimes has to rein him in.

Yū Nishinoya
Nishinoya is the Karasuno boys’ team’s libero, affectionately nicknamed “Karasuno’s Guardian Deity” by the rest of the team. He’s the shortest member of the team and is known for being super energetic and boisterous.

Kiyoko Shimizu
Kiyoko is a third-year student and the current manager for the Karasuno boys’ volleyball team. She’s typically quiet and reserved, with a more serious disposition, though she cares a great deal about the team’s success (and her position as their manager).

Hitoka Yachi
Yachi is a first-year student recruited to become the team’s manager after its current manager, Kiyoko, graduates. She’s very sweet-natured, polite, and a little easily intimidated by others, though she grows more confident over time.

Ittetsu Takeda
The cheerful and slightly bumbling Takeda serves as the Karasuno volleyball team’s faculty advisor and head coach, though he doesn’t actually know much about volleyball at the start and leaves the practical coaching to Ukai.

Keishin Ukai
Ukai is the Karasuno volleyball team’s surly yet ever-supportive coach in Haikyuu!! He’s also a former alumnus of the team himself and is reluctant to return as coach until he sees the team play and realizes their potential. Competitive, tactical, and hardworking, Ukai manages to set the Karasuno team on an upward trajectory throughout the series!
