Preppy 101

The word “preppy” originally described wealthy young men who went to “preparatory schools,” and often continued their education at Ivy League colleges. The term likely originated in New England in the 1890s, but evolved over time. “Preppy” became an American subculture and aesthetic for both men and women that’s all about a modest, clean-cut appearance. People who are “preppy” are typically academically focused, conservative, and conventional.

The traditional preppy style is polished, timeless, and collegiate-inspired. Twin sets, cardigans, polos, button-ups, blazers, rugby shirts, cable-knit sweaters, chinos, vests, loafers, and Mary Janes are staple fashion pieces. Fabrics, patterns, and colors like seersucker, cashmere, argyle, houndstooth, plaid, tortoiseshell, pastels, navy, and cream embody this aesthetic. Brands like J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, Lily Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Kate Spade, and Sperry are known for their preppy clothing, shoes, and/or accessories.

Gen Z has redefined “preppy” to focus more on clothes and accessories featuring bright colors, cheetah or leopard print, florals, smiley faces, hearts, lightning bolts, bows, and ribbons.
