More About the Hashira of Demon Slayer
In Demon Slayer, the Hashira are the highest-ranked Demon Slayers. Their skills manifest in Breathing Styles (specialized swordsmanship styles practiced by the Demon Slayers), and some Hashira even invent their own styles! Here, we’ll go over all known Hashira, past and present.
Giyu Tomioka is the current Water Hashira. He’s stoic and stern, but underneath is a strong sense of justice and deep survivor’s guilt; he even wears a haori made from halves belonging to his late older sister and a deceased friend, Sabito. Giyu is the Demon Slayer who initially meets Tanjiro and Nezuko, setting them on the path to becoming Demon Slayers themselves.
Mitsuri Kanroji is the Love Hashira—having developed the Love Breathing Style herself, based on her training in Flame Breathing. She first created the Love Breathing Style while battling wolves made by Blood Demon Art. As a Hashira, Mitsuri is passionate, joyful, and seemingly innocent, although she’s just as deadly as any of her comrades against demons.
Obanai Iguro is the Serpent Hashira, with Serpent Breathing being an offshoot of the more traditional Water Breathing Style. Obanai is very harsh and even merciless at times, with high expectations of his fellow Demon Slayers. He also considers himself unworthy, despite his skill and dedication to the cause, as a result of his traumatic past.
Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Wind Hashira, known for being rude and abrasive toward just about anyone besides the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps (Kagaya Ubuyashiki). Sanemi has a great deal of hatred toward demons, in large part because of the number of people he has lost; he goes so far as to try and goad Nezuko into attacking him at one point, although she resisted.
Muichiro Tokito is the Mist Hashira, which is a Breathing Style derived from Wind Breathing. Muichiro himself is quite air-headed and absent-minded, although this is partly due to memory loss. Later, after regaining his memories, Muichiro also regains lost aspects of his personality, becoming more expressive and compassionate.
Shinobu Kocho is the Insect Hashira, with Insect being a Breathing Style based on Flower Breathing. It was personally created by Shinobu, who uses it to compensate for her lesser physical strength against demons. Shinobu herself attempts to act very sweet and friendly, although she’s really just trying to emulate her late sister, Kanae; underneath, Shinobu harbors a great deal of unresolved anger over her sister’s death.
Gyomei Himejima is the Stone Hashira, with Stone being one of the five main Breathing Styles. Gyomei himself is something of a gentle giant, with a very imposing and strong figure, yet a gentle and compassionate demeanor. He gets emotional easily and mentors other up-and-coming Demon Slayers.
Kyojuro Rengoku is the Flame Hashira, with Flame being another one of the five main Breathing Styles. Kyojuro inherited the title from his father, Shinjuro, and embraces his role as Flame Hashira with enthusiasm and great cheer. However, he is also tactical, clever, and well-practiced at spotting potential and skill in others.
Kanae Kocho was the former Flower Hashira before her death. She was Shinobu Kocho’s older sister, as well as the elder adoptive sister of Kanao Tsuyuri. As a Hashira, Kanae was good-natured, gentle, and easygoing.
Sakonji Urokodaki is a retired Water Hashira, having held the position before Giyu. Not only did he train Giyu, but he’s also responsible for having trained Tanjiro (the protagonist of the series), Sabito (Giyu’s friend), and Makomo.
Jigoro Kuwajima was a Thunder Hashira responsible for training Zenitsu Agatsuma and Kaigaku in the Demon Slayer Corps. He’s mainly seen through Zenitsu’s flashbacks during the series.
Shinjuro Rengoku was the former Flame Hashira before he retired and handed the title down to his son, Kyojuro.
Tengen Uzui was the Sound Hashira before his retirement. Although a formidable warrior in his prime, Tengen decided to retire after he was badly injured in a fight with Gyutaro, a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki, losing his left eye and hand.
