How to Choose a Stuffed Animal Name

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Consider the stuffed animal’s species. Do you have a teddy bear? A unicorn? A monkey? No matter what species your plushie is, this is a great place to start when choosing a name. Think about what qualities are associated with that animal. According to Hill, “Children often choose literal names for stuffed animals and dolls (ex: 'Dolly' for a doll, 'Uni' for a stuffed unicorn, 'Lambie' for a stuffed lamb, 'Teddy' for a stuffed bear, or 'Woofy' for a stuffed dog. Because children often have a more narrow selection of names to choose from, they are limited to words or names that are already familiar to them.”[4] Here are a few ideas to get you started:[5]

Use your plushie's appearance as inspiration. What color is your stuffed animal? Is it big or small? Take a long look at your fluffy friend to figure out its most noticeable physical traits. Then, use these details to come up with a fitting name.[6]
    • For example, if your plushie is pink, consider “Pinkie Pie” or “Cotton Candy.” If it’s brown, consider “Chocolate” or “Woody.”
    • Hill notes, “Parents and caregivers can help children name stuffed animals by pointing out descriptions or useful adjectives (ex: 'I see that your dino has spikey back and green spots.') It's best to focus on short names, though some kids may enjoy a more complicated option, such as 'Mr. Buttons' or 'Princess Kitty Cat.'”[7]
    • Hill continues, “Toy or lovey names tend to be highly functional, relying on a description of the item (ex: 'Pinky' or 'Floppy' for a pink bunny with long ears) or a name they have seen used elsewhere. In many cases, children may recycle names or use very similar-sounding variations (ex: 'Pinky' is the pink kitty and 'Winky' is the green puppy).”[8]
  3. 3
Draw inspiration from a popular character. Think of some of your favorite movie, cartoon, or book characters that resemble your stuffed toy. If there’s a character you really like, why not name your plushie after it? The character doesn’t have to be the same species as your toy if you don’t want it to be.
    • For example, you might name your teddy bear Winnie (after Winnie the Pooh) or Paddington (after Paddington Bear).
    • Hill says, “If the child feels stuck, parents can suggest one or two names and see how the child responds. Most of the time, children will be amenable to a simple suggestion and won't feel pressure to hunt for a perfect name. When in doubt, adults can begin referring to a stuffed animal by a descriptor or relationship (ex: simply, 'Your giraffe.')”[9]
  4. 4
Embrace the name that your child chooses. Hill says, “The most important thing is to respect the child's choice and go with the flow. For example, if your child wants to name their stuffed lion, 'LieLie', don't try to coax or insist that it's a baby name or that he should be called 'Fluffy' instead. Imagine telling your in-laws or colleagues the baby name you chose and having them reply with, 'That's a terrible option. You should name xyz instead.' It's the child's stuffed animal, so they get to choose the name that works for them (even if you think it's silly or weird).”[10]
