More About Couples’ Names & Ship Names

What’s in a “ship” name? When you’re creating a name for your favorite couple—real, fictional, or otherwise—there are a few tried-and-true ways to come up with something cute and catchy.

Brainstorm different combinations of the couple’s names.
You can play around with this until you have a couple’s name that slides off the tongue easily. And don’t just try combining each person’s first name—you can use last names, initials, whatever works! Cover your bases by brainstorming every possible combination you can think of; then, pick the one that sounds best to you.

There are plenty of ways to combine two names; you could take the first initial of one and tack it to the front of the other name, or take the first syllable of one and the last syllable(s) of the other and mash them together, for instance. There’s no right or wrong way to do this!

Make a couple’s name based on nicknames.
Maybe the couple uses nicknames to refer to one another affectionately—those can be used in a “ship” name, too! You could try combining two nicknames into one word or even just give the couple a nickname referring to both of them.

Base the couple’s name on interests or traits.
Ask yourself: what shared interests does the couple have? Is there a way to incorporate those interests into their “ship” name? This could include a show, movie, or book they both love, a hobby they regularly do together, or even some major event they experienced as a couple.

Alternatively, brainstorm characteristics that you associate with each person. This doesn’t just have to include descriptive personality traits (like “smart” or “funny”); it can consist of nouns (places or things) you associate with them, as well as verbs (action words) that capture things these people do. Try creating a couple’s name using characteristics and words that capture the couple’s overall vibe (rather than their actual names)!

  • BatCat - A couple’s name for Batman’s Bruce Wayne (the Batman) and Selina Kyle (Catwoman)
  • Gelphie - A popular ship name that Wicked fans use in reference to Glinda and Elphaba Thropp
