What does it really mean to be an interesting person?
You might think being an interesting person has to do with living an exciting, adventurous, “big” life—the life of a celebrity, or a globe-trotting explorer, or some other third kind of person we can’t think of right now.
But being interesting has far less to do with the types of experiences that happen to you and more to do with your perception of those experiences. Traveling doesn’t make you interesting. Neither does falling in love, or winning an Oscar, or writing a wikiHow quiz (wait… *checks notes*...yup, that’s accurate). It’s what you make of these experiences that determines whether you’re really an interesting person or not. Did you let them change you? Did you let them open a door inside of you?
As Emily Dickinson, one of America’s most interesting and famously reclusive poets, wrote, “The brain is wider than the sky.” The most tragic and boring thing you could do is to live a life of adventure and intrigue but endure it passively, not engaging with your life, not becoming new in your brain and soul. So whether you’ve spent your life washing dishes or winning marathons, ask yourself: Have I greeted every hour with wonder? If not, it’s never too late to start.
